Conditions that may cause knee pain

Knee pain can happen to anyone and can have several causes.

It is more often associated with age and can cause pain when walking and moving the joint. Other lifestyle factors can play a part such as playing sports and previous injury.

Sports injury may involve dislocation of the knee, cartilage damage, tendonitis, and torn tendons, ligaments or meniscus.

It is also possible to have underlying issues that may affect the knee and cause pain. These include bursitis, gout, osteoarthritis, bleeding in the joint or arthritis that have become infected.

Most commonly knee pain is caused by:

  • Anterior cruciate ligament injury
  • Meniscus tear
  • Inflamed joint
  • Sports injury
  • Baker’s cyst (a fluid filled swelling behind the knee)
  • Wear and tear of the joint over time (osteoarthritis)
